In 2022, the Emergency Military Unit passed the certification process of the Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) module of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM).

The certification process took place during the “Domino 22” exercise in France, where the RPAS team from UME’s signal battalion (BTUME) participated. During this exercise, where Belgium, Austria, Germany, France and Spain participated as part of the UCPM, the RPAS team faced different challenges related to the use of drones in big emergencies, such as the use of thermal cameras in a fictional fire provoked by the clash of two ships, the live transmission of high-resolution images during an oil spill at a refinery or a tsunami in Provence.
