Late on Friday, September 8, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake on the Richter scale struck Morocco, killing nearly 3,000 people and injuring over 5,600, according to the Moroccan government.
After Morocco accepted Spain's offer, on September 10, the Emergency Military Unit (UME) deployed 56 troops, divided into the advisory and liaison team (UMEDAT) and the urban search and rescue (USAR) team from the 4th emergency response battalion (BIEM IV).
Being the first international team to arrive at Marrakech airport, the Unit was responsible for the organization of the Reception and Coordination Centre (RDC) until the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination Team (UNDAC) was established.
During the mission, UME, which established its base of operations in Amizmiz, carried out 15 search and rescue missions, following the daily assignments by the Moroccan Civil Protection officials. During the 11 days of the operation, the Unit collaborated with several international USAR teams and other teams from Spain.
