Late on Friday, September 8th, an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale struck Morocco leaving nearly 3,000 dead and more than 5,600 injured, according to Moroccan government data.

After Morocco accepted Spain's offer, on September 10th, the Military Emergency Unit (UME) was ordered to intervene sending 56 soldiers, organised into the advisory and liaison team (UMEDAT) from the Headquarters, and urban search and rescue (USAR), corresponding on this occasion to the Fourth Emergency Intervention Battalion (BIEM IV).

Being the first international team to arrive at Marrakech airport, the Unit was responsible for the organization of the Reception and Coordination Centre for Teams (RDC) until the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination Team (UNDAC) was established.

During the mission, the UME, which established its base of operations in Amizmiz, carried out 15 search and rescue missions in accordance with the points assigned daily by the Moroccan Civil Protection officials. During the 11 days that the operation lasted, the Unit collaborated with several international USAR teams and others also coming from Spain.
